Public Relations used to be about managing messages.

Today it is increasingly about managing relationships between people.

In a world shaped by social media, permanent connectivity and fragile trust, organisations are no longer separate from society. They are embedded in it. Communication is continuous and reputation is shaped not by campaigns but by everyday interactions between people.

This is why I describe modern society as a Picnic Society.

A picnic is a place where many small groups gather in the same space. Conversations happen simultaneously, relationships form and dissolve, and influence spreads in unpredictable ways.

Social media has created exactly this type of environment.

Individuals, organisations and communities now exist in a shared communication space where anyone can participate, influence narratives, and shape reputations.

In the Picnic Society:

• communication never stops
• everyone can influence public perception
• reputation is built through relationships, not messages

This is why Public Relations is evolving into People Relations.

Instead of managing communication channels, organisations must learn to understand people, build trust and maintain long‑term relationships with their stakeholders.
